# Labour Inspectorate

**In short:** A labour inspectorate is the state body that checks whether employers follow labour law — contracts, pay, working time, safety — and receives complaints from workers.

**Simply put:** If you have no contract, your pay is not paid, the hours are illegal or the work is dangerous, first ask your employer in writing. If nothing changes, report it to the inspectorate. A complaint with dates, amounts and documents is stronger.

**Example:** Two salaries in a row are a month late. The employee writes to the employer, gets no answer, and files a complaint with copies of the contract and bank statements.

**General rule:** In most countries a labour inspectorate checks working conditions and whether a relationship is really employment.

> **Example: Bulgaria** — the Executive Agency "General Labour Inspectorate" carries out "overall control of compliance with labour legislation" (Labour Code, Article 399(1)); where work is done without a contract, its inspectors declare the employment relationship (Article 405a(1)). It also issues permits for workers under 18.
